Rubber Expansion Joint Advantages Compared to Metal Expansion Joints

Sep. 03, 2024

What is a Rubber Expansion Joint?

A rubber expansion joint is a flexible connector to absorb noise, shock, vibration, physical and thermal energy. Made of natural or synthetic elastomers it may be internally reinforced with fabrics and metal for strength and pressure resistance whilst metal reinforcement may be used externally for movement control.

What Is the Purpose of the Rubber Joint?

Rubber expansion joints can absorb large movement in very short distance. They provide all directional movement, such as axial, angular, lateral and torsional that may occur from external conditions. Also reduce wind, shock loading and seismic movements.

Rubber Expansion Joint Advantages Compared to Metal Expansion Joints

Rubber expansion joints offer several advantages over metal expansion joints. Below are a few key highlights:

Minimal Face-to-Face Dimensions

The compact design of rubber expansion joints provides significant cost savings compared to more expensive bends or loops. While the pipe material itself may be similar in cost to the expansion joint, overall expenses are reduced when considering factors such as plant space, installation labor, supports, and pressure drops.

Lightweight

Rubber expansion joints are relatively lightweight, eliminating the need for special handling equipment during installation. This contributes to lower labor costs and easier positioning during the setup process.

Low Movement Forces Required

The natural flexibility of rubber expansion joints allows them to absorb a wide range of movements with minimal force, reducing the risk of damage to connected equipment.

Reduced Fatigue Factor

Unlike steel, natural and synthetic elastomers are not prone to fatigue breakdown or embrittlement. Additionally, the steel-rubber interface in the joints and mating flanges prevents electrolytic corrosion, enhancing durability and longevity.

Reduced Heat Loss

Rubber expansion joints help minimize heat loss, contributing to long, maintenance-free service. Unlike additional piping for loops, which increases operating costs due to greater heat loss, rubber joints offer a more energy-efficient solution.

Corrosion and Erosion Resistance

A wide range of natural, synthetic, and specialized elastomers and fabrics are available for rubber expansion joints, designed to withstand various pressure and temperature conditions, as well as resist corrosion, abrasion, and erosion. Many joints are available with PTFE/TFE/FEP liners, which conform to the joint body for added protection against corrosive materials. Fluoroplastics, known for their thermal stability, non-stick surface, low friction, and resistance to almost all corrosive fluids and chemicals, provide an extra layer of defense against harsh environments.

No gaskets

Elastomeric expansion joints are supplied with flanges of vulcanized rubber and fabric integrated with the tube, making the use of gaskets unnecessary. The sealing surfaces of the expansion joint equalize uneven surfaces of the pipe flange to provide a fluid and gas-tight seal. A ring gasket may be required for raised face flanges.

Acoustical Impedance

Elastomeric expansion joints effectively reduce noise transmission in piping systems. The flexible elastomer material acts as a dampener, absorbing a large percentage of noise and vibration.

Greater Shock Resistance

Elastomeric expansion joints offer excellent resistance to shock stresses caused by hydraulic surges, water hammer, or pump cavitation, protecting the system from potential damage.
